Using Google site: website.com to view the website, it is found that thousands of pages of the website are all the same description meta tags, but I use Google site: dev.webtrees.net to search out the description meta tags that are not exactly the same. Am I wrong? I have set the text in the control panel - Genealogy settings - collocation marks. Should I delete it? But prompt, delete will show website name, that is to say search engine will continue to include thousands of pages described as website name. As like as two peas, dev.webtrees.net did a lot in Google search (though the search results also had many identical meta tags, but at least better than my website. All descriptions of my website are meta markings exactly the same, haha!: -

What do you want to appear in the meta-description tag?

I think it's normal for a demo station to be described as shown in the figure below. For the sentences set in the control panel, the search engine includes the same sentences. The user's search experience is too bad. How can the demo station do it? Please advise, thank you.

These descriptions are created automatically by Google.

webtrees does not create them.

If we added a meta-description, what text should we include?

Can you understand this: the description meta tag of the demo station is set to null, right. If so, I think the description meta tag of the control panel's genealogy is limited to the home page of a genealogy (that is, the one introducing the genealogy), and other pages should not be seen. Otherwise, the search engine will list the description, user search and full screen description for each page, which is too bad.

My understanding is that owing to keyword spamming, search engines do not score the meta tag contents highly and some don't consider them at all in ranking sites. This makes the meta tag useless or worse if the whole site has the same description. The major search engines can make a description from the contents of the page it you don't provide a meta tag. The thing to look up is SEO (search engine optimization) to find the gurus on this subject.

That is true for <meta name="keywords">

But the consensus is that <meta name="description"> is used for the search result "snippet" - provided it seems legitimate.

Since my description contains only text that appears elsewhere on the page, this should hopefully be OK.

We will find out in a month or two. If it doesn't work, we can change it.

They can. But as shown above, this contains lots of irrelevant text, such as the labels from all the tabs.

I am open to suggestions from any SEO experts out there...

I don't think it's necessary to describe meta tags on each page, only on the front page of the genealogy. Other pages let the search engine grab the content by itself, and the content searched by users is more valuable. ;)

Greg, I think the demo station 2.0.3 is very good, but the latest version I downloaded in GitHub is 2.0.2. How to change my current file and implement the description meta tag like the demo station. In addition, suggestion 2.0.3: the description meta tag set in the control panel only affects the first page of each genealogy, while the internal page demonstration station 2.0.3 is very beautiful.

I see that google has already used the new meta-description in the search results.

Meta tags and descriptions can be a bit tricky to get right. It's like finding the perfect seasoning for a dish. If you're seeing thousands of pages with the same description meta tags, it might be a good idea to revisit your settings. Deleting them might not be the best move because, as you mentioned, it could default to showing your website name, which isn't very informative. When it comes to SEO, have you considered organic link building services? They can help you stand out in those search results and improve your overall SEO game.
