Question
Sorting Lists alphabetically by default?

I am using webtrees 2.0.17
On the webtrees main menu there is a "Lists" button near the top of the page. It will generate various lists.
The default method for generating both "Individuals lists" and "Family lists" is to sort by last name with the greatest number of people first.
I can find no settings in the control panel to sort those lists alphabetically by last name as default method.
Anyone know how to force it to sort by last name alphabetically as default sort method?
Thanks, Russell Baker

Are you sure? AFAICT, the default is alphabetic. However, it should remember your last choice, so if you chose numeric, it will use that next time.

I am 100% sure the default sorting method for webtrees 2.017 is numerical.
The latest webtrees default sorting method is now alphabetical.
Was just trying to avoid a complete update to fix what I am using.

Specifically, if I don't clear the browser history it retains the settings. If I visit the page as a visitor using the same browser after I change the settings, then the settings remain changed if I don't delete the browser history.Replied by fisharebest on topic Sorting Lists alphabetically by default?

When I close that browser and the browser history is deleted, when I start that same browser again and load the lists, the settings are back to numerical. The settings are not retained in the webtrees instance, they only remain if I dont delete browser history.
When I visit your demo webtrees current release with a clean browser, the lists page settings are alphabetical by default.
All the browsers I use clear all browsing history when I close them. I guess my version 2.017 of webtrees uses a cookie to retain those settings? If that is true then a new visitor to the lists will not be able to see the names alphabetically on a first visit?

It is as Greg sayed: The selected sorting of surname in family-list is retained, until next selection and seems to be stored by browser, meaning is the same if logged-in or-out.
The pages are not cached, so did not test with empty cache.
I am using 2.1.20. So you should perhaps switch to the current version.

Hello Franz Frese,Replied by Franz Frese on topic Sorting Lists alphabetically by default?
I just did a test on my mobile with chrome:

Thank you for your interest.
Yes, I already realised that version webtrees-2.1.20 uses the alphabetical list sorting as default. I am trying to avoid upgrading and find a way to get the same alphabetical default method of sorting the lists in my webtrees-2.0.17. Currently the default in 2.0.17 is numerical.
I was hoping there is a simple one-liner change I could be pointed to that would change the default sort method to alphabetical.
I also understand that this may not be attainable in my webtrees-2.0.17 and I accept that.

I remember being annoyed by this issue several years ago when 2.0.17 was the current release, but it was solved by upgrading to a newer release. There aren't a lot of feature changes between 2.0.17 and 2.0.20, so why not upgrade? Have you hacked the source code to add new features instead of creating modules???Yes, I already realised that version webtrees-2.1.20 uses the alphabetical list sorting as default. I used the "search" feature in this forum to look for discussions of that sorting issue and found this thread which refers back to an even older discussion . Perhaps that change will do what you want, but honestly you should really upgrade to the latest version of 2.0.x

Thank you for digging up those posts. It works wonderfully

As far as upgrading webtrees, when my hosting provider forces me to then I will. And yes there is a little bit of changed code.
This old retired guy changes things as little as possible across my whole spectrum. Just how it is anymore.
