Delete all GEDCOMs and path to media files was created by Vicki L.
I'm a new user, found webtrees a couple of days ago, set it up, and imported 2 GEDCOM files that have a bit of overlap. Used ftp to move my images to the server, but can't seem to get the media file location path correct. Changing paths via Control Panel made a real mess of things.
My media/images are not all in the same folder, and the different folder locations are reflected in the GEDCOMs. On the server I have tried using data, then data/media, now data/text-pic (which is their current location). The records in the tables don't seem to change to what I want, and even when the broken picture location seems to match totally where I've placed the images, they still don't show.
I finally decided to delete the GEDCOMS, and use Notepad++ to change the media path, then import again. I was able to delete one of the GEDCOMs. After changing the media path in the GEDCOM and importing again, it still had the wrong path (is retaining the / information), so I deleted it and will try again. When I try to delete the other GEDCOM (only one that's left), there is no Delete option.
Am I missing something in regards to how to get the people records linked to the media records? I expected the images to be automatically found if the path was correct, but that doesn't seem to be true.
So, question 1, how to I delete all my gedcom information and start over?
Question 2 is, what path would be correct for the gedcom if the server path is this:
webtrees.descendantsof.com/data/text-pic
In Website preferences, my Data folder is set to ../../public_html/webtrees.descendantsof.com/data/
Is there a requirement that all media be placed in the data/media folder? If so, can I have subfolders? They are currently in many different folders, and it's possible some of the filenames would be duplicated if placed them in only one large folder.
I don't plan to do any updates on the site. It's strictly to let a limited number of relatives view my research. I'll do all updates locally, and periodically upload a new GEDCOM. I had an old Drupal 6 site that used the Gen Viewer Applet to display Gedcoms, but that no longer works, and I'm moving that site to Backdrop CMS (didn't have the $$ to convert to Drupal 10), so I was delighted to find webtrees to view the GEDCOM files. I hope to use the two CMS products together (they're on the same server), with links getting me back and forth.
If you have any suggestions, or warnings of pitfalls, please share. Thanks.

May I ask what was wrong with the standard ./data/media?
> use Notepad++ to change the media path, then import again
That step is not needed, unless your files go all over the place. There is an option during import to adjust the root path in media object references.
It is adviced to have no path in the GEDCOM data, which simply maps to ./data/media
I treat that folder on the server as a big black box. Stuff is dropped into it, and the software can access it. I have no business poking around there myself. Some admins even go as far as assigning totally random file names to their images. It works for the web pages, which is all that matters eventually.
> how to I delete all my gedcom information and start over?
On the control panel click on a tree. On that page titled "Manage Family Trees" there is a link labelled "delete". That does exactly that, it should remove everything from the database. All the rest is images on the server, and you know best where you put them

Or just import a new GEDCOM file. This will replace all exsting GEDCOM data - while keeping all your settings for the tree.
> In Website preferences, my Data folder is set to ../../public_html/webtrees.descendantsof.com/data/
Um? Isn't this just a complicated way to say "data/" - which is the default.
> and the different folder locations are reflected in the GEDCOMs.
Specific examples would really help. We don't know if you are talking about absolute paths, relative paths, or whatever. You are abstracting the problem, and we can only give abstract answers.

Thanks for your response. And the above is the answer! My files go all over the place!
My current local database has 67,000+ names and 25,000 families, built over the past 50 years. I'm only going to put a couple of surname lines (5-6 generations) on Webtrees, which will be about 8,000 names. The media files on my local machine are sorted into folders identifying the type, such as text-pictures, census, obit, deeds, marriages, etc. When I attach a media item to a person on my local computer, I attach using the full path name on my computer, which is then copied into any GEDCOM created. If all files are thrown into one folder, data/media, there is great possibility some of the filenames will be duplicated.
My only choices for exporting GEDCOMs in my local program is to "Include names of pictures" and "Include names of media files", or don't include the names at all. I'll try importing the GEDCOM again with the cleaned up media file locations and see what happens. Also noticed I exported as Ansel instead of UTF-8, so it may be best for me to delete everything and reload from scratch. Haven't done much customizing yet, and I can screenshot to make it easier to recreate.
Yes, this -
I loaded 2 GEDCOM files. On the first one, the option to Delete appeared, and I deleted it. On the second GEDCOM (which had been the 1st one imported) there is no option to Delete. The leftmost column only has:
Home page
Preferences
Privacy
Data fixes
The Delete option is missing.
Edit: it appears that when there are 2 GEDCOMs loaded, the Delete option appears on both of them. When there is only 1 GEDCOM, the Delete option disappears.

Here's a sample of how my image locations ended up... quite the mess, and every "fix" seemed to make it worse. Still in my learning phase... I'll get it figured out.

Ah yes, that is correct. Without a tree there is nothing. User login roles are tied to a tree, I think that's why.
You cannot delete it, but you can overwrite it by importing.
Or add another tree. Then you can delete it.

Yes, that's what I ended up doing. Imported a new file, then had the option to delete, so deleted the old one.
Also discovered the problem with my media files not showing up. After manually getting the file paths correct in my GEDCOM, they still didn't show up. Updated the name of one on the individuals record, and the image appeared. After experimenting a bit, I discovered that whatever upper/lower case the folders and filename are on the server, is the exact upper/lower case they must be to show up on Webtrees. I've always used Windows, and never bothered to make sure the filenames in my genealogy database matched the upper/lower of the actual file, and it never mattered. Now it matters, so I'll have to rename each media file with the correct upper/lower letters to view them. Sigh....
So many things I did in the past, not knowing what future consequences would appear. Have a number of custom fields now that need to be a different type in my master database. I put descriptive notes in what turned out to be only for locations. Never mattered before, because my only options were to view the data as text. Now the locations can be mapped, and notes doesn't play well with map location! Looks like I'll be cleaning up data for the next few months.
Thanks for everyone's help, and I've enjoyed reading the questions everyone is posting in the forums.
