If you want to go the subdomain route, then ask your hosting provider how to.
I've set it up in 2011 and it was not difficult. I started with www.bertkoor.nl/stamboom (maybe that even still works) and filled in a form to let subdomain 'stamboom' be served from folder 'public_html/stamboom'.

I've already set up my subdomain and copied everything over from the old path, but it's not working. I'll check in with my host to make sure I set up the subdomain correctly. Hopefully, it's just a small issue that can be sorted out!

Start simple. Put just a plain index.html file saying "hello" there.
