Change marriage after mistake was created by KLelong
[object Object] Hi,I searched a bit to see if this has been answered, but I didn't find anything, I could have made a wrong query though. So pointers accepted ;-)
I married a woman to the wrong person. That marriage has also a son. So I would like to set things right.
I gave the son a second father, which did work via the GUI. Removing the husband from the wife took editing the gedcom data, as did removing the son from the "father".
I don't know how I did it, but now the correct husband has his wife and son : when I click on the husband's family, all is OK. But when I click on the wife in the husband's family she has no marriage and no son, so no family.
Any suggestions to set this right ?
Right before I started modifying I made a backup of the database, so I could revert things if there is a better way to correct my mistake.
If needed I could make my webtree publicly available.
TIA

I think you have not found the "Family with..." link yet. On the Family page there is an Edit menu.
Remove wrong father, add correct one. It can all be done on the dedicated Family page.

Don't worry about your mistake. It's easy to fix without having to restore a backup to your database!

First a bit of background. In GEDCOM, there is an Individual record for each person (which starts with a line similar to "0 @X1@ INDI"), and there is a a Family record for each family (which starts with a line similar to "0 @X2@ FAM"). The values between the at-signs are pointers that are used to link records. Whenever a person belongs to a family, there must be pointers linking the two records IN BOTH DIRECTIONS.  The pointers are used differently, depending on the role of X1  in that family. Thus we see
  1. If Individual X1 was a child in Family X2, then the Individual record X1 will contain a line that looks like "1 FAMC @X2@" and the Family record X2 will contain a line that looks like "1 CHIL @X1@"
  2. If Individual X1 was an adult in Family X2, then the Individual record X1 will contain a line that looks like "1 FAMS @X2@" and the Family record X2 will contain a line that looks like either  "1 HUSB @X1@" or "1 WIFE @X1@"
You can add these lines yourself by editing the raw GEDCOM, but if you forget one of the links, then the family won't be visible from the individual, or the individual won't be visible from the family....

The right way to make changes to the family structure is to select "Change family members" under the blue edit button near the top right corner of the Family page.  This gives you the option to drop an individual from an existing role, or add some other individual to a vacant role. (I suggest you only make one change at a time, then save and repeat if you want to make more changes.)

I don't know how I did it, but now the correct husband has his wife and son : when I click on the husband's family, all is OK. But when I click on the wife in the husband's family she has no marriage and no son, so no family.

Your symptoms suggest that this family has a link TO the wife's Individual record but the reverse link FROM the wife to this family is missing. You might be able to fix your current problem by going to the family record and first removing the wife from the family, then adding back the same wife -- which will create the links in both directions.

Another option is to go to your Control Panel, click on the correct tree from the second block to take you to the "Manage Family Trees" page. Click on "Check for Errors" in the second column, under the heading "Genealogy Data". It will detect missing links of the type you described, and offer to repair the damage.  If someone is half-present in a family, it might accidentally restore them as a full member, when you intended to remove them, but you can always use the standard "Change family members" function to clean up afterwards.

If you go to the family record, there is an edit option "Change family members". You could have used this to remove the incorrect father, and add the correct one.

> Removing the husband from the wife took editing the gedcom data, as did removing the son from the "father".

What I guess has happened is this:

In GEDCOM, each family link is stored twice. Once from individual to family, and again from family to individual.

If you edit the GEDCOM data, you need to do both consistently. If you only did one, you get some strange errors, such as you describe.

There is a "check for errors" tool in the control panel which will try to find these.

You can fix these by using the "Change family members" to add/remove (or remove/add).

Or just revert to your backup :-)

Thanks for the responses, but I don't find that "Family with..." link.
Included is a screenshot from the family-tab of the wife, with the edit-button clicked on.
I tried using the option at the bottom : "add a husband using an existing individual". Now the wife has the husband, but the husband has two wives, both the same person.
More mess :-(
About reverting the backup : I think my error was before the backup. My backup was before messing things up more.

FWIW, I reverted to the backup, so less mess.
I'll await further responses.
And indeed about end of october last year I gave the right husband a wife without realising she already had a husband, albeit the wrong one.
Why the error you would ask. The names of those husbands are similar : Cornelius and Corneel. And the fathers of those men are brothers, so the same family-name.

The link "Family with ..." is in the Family Navigator on the right harmonica.
