Inquiry about GEDCOM 7.0 Support in webtrees was created by wtHatchery3355
Subject: Inquiry about GEDCOM 7.0

Support in WebtreesHello webtrees Team,
I hope this message finds you well.
I am currently using webtrees and I have noticed that it primarily supports GEDCOM 5.5.1. With the recent developments in genealogy software and the introduction of GEDCOM 7.0, I am curious to know if there are any plans for webtrees to transition to this newer standard.GEDCOM 7.0 offers enhanced features, particularly for multimedia handling and data organization, which could greatly benefit users like myself.Thank you for your hard work on this project, and I look forward to your response regarding the potential support for GEDCOM 7.0 in future updates.Best regards,

webtrees allready supports quite a lot of GEDCOM 7 and the ongoing development is strongly moving towards it. But version 7 is not yet the overall standard, neither in webtrees nor in any other software I know of.

Using webtrees for viewing data works already pretty well with GEDCOM 7. If I export my tree and convert it to Gedcom 7 (e.g. with the Extended Import/Export module) and re-import it to webtrees (as GEDCOM 7), it looks pretty well. As far I can see from my data, the only major feature missing is to support @VOID@ references, which are new in GEDCOM 7; see Github issue url=https://github.com/fisharebest/webtrees/issues/4695]#4695[/url.

While viewing data is already usable, editing is limited. This is related to the user interface and has been discussed several times in the forum. At the moment, the user interface only supports editing one version of the standard. While webtrees is very flexible in viewing data and has a powerful concept for configuring different GEDCOM structures, it is probably very of difficult to support editing several standards in parallel. As far as I understand the webtrees strategy, we will wait until a certain milestone and switch editing from 5.5.1 to 7.0 at that time.
