From the Annotated Gedcom specs:
The BIRT (birth), CHR (christening), and DEAT (death) dates may be unknown. The line value of these records may be empty (indicated by <NULL> in the definition), but, as stated in chapter 1, records must have value; the line value of most records may only be empty if it has subrecords. If there are no subrecords, the line value Y must be used.
The line 1 CHR Y means christened (but do not know where or when), and the line 1 DEAT Y means died (but do not know where or when).
That the lineage-linked form also allows the line 1 BIRT Y is a bit puzzling; it means born (but do not know where or when), and thus conveys exactly the same information as when that line isn't present.
The GEDCOM specification should not allow 1 BIRT Y. Consider this deprecated.
So to me the checkbox doesn't really make much sense. webtrees could (and maybe does) infer it's value from the presence of any subrecords.
But it does no harm, and imho doesn't alter behaviour in any significant way.

If you have no details, just omit the BIRT record entirely.
Birth is infered from the existance of a GEDCOM record

No, the annotated gedcom specs by Tamura Jones are based on v5.5.1: the same as what webtrees always used.WGroleau wrote:

Also basics like this were in the specs for decades already.

Whether or not "1 BIRT Y" was spec-compliant, it's still true that it's kind of weird. Unless they are future-proofing against the day a human can be built without being born.

Supposing I am aware that a person (today younger as 100 years) has died, but I do neither know the place nor the date. How do I proceed ?
I can't see a checkbox.
Only by entering "1 DEAT Y" directly in the GEDCOM ?
To give public access to this person.
Or is there another way ?
Both MAUPILLÉ & RAUHUT families are using webtrees V2.1.18
