There may be a message in the webtrees error log.
There may be a message in the web-server error log.
Common causes of this error are:
1) file permissions (e.g. cannot read/write).
2) file size (e.g. large size in pixels).
3) server misconfiguration (e.g. missing php-gd library).

I installed the version 2.0 alpha 4 and have the same problem. The system use php 7.3 and php-gd is installed. All the permissions are read/write for all. Also the addition of a new picture does not work. I cannot save the picture.

I am not a specialist and I do not know what it means. All the other applications on the server work fine.

Aha. So when you said you have the "same problem", you actually meant you have a different problem
500 means server error
404 means file not found
So, webtrees cannot find the media file for this media object.
Go to the media object. The details should include a file. This might be something like 'photos/grandpa.jpg'.
Go to the tree preferences page, and look for the media directory setting. By default, this will be 'data/media/'
So, webtrees will be looking in data/media/photos/grandpa.jpg' for the file, and it isn't there.
Either you didn't upload it to your server, or you put it somewhere else.

Very strange:
I uploaded all the fotos in /data/media/ but the system find only the name, not the pictures. If I cancel the pathname "media" the foto is visible.
Another problem:
If I add a foto to a person and delete it afterwards the foto remains in the directory /data/media

Your media records contain "media/photo.jpg"
So, webtrees is looking for "data/media/media/photo.jpg"
> If I cancel the pathname "media" the foto is visible.
The "media/" should not be there.
Suggestion:
1) Export your data to a GEDCOM file.
2) Import the GEDCOM file back - but choose the option "remove media path" and select "media/"
> If I add a foto to a person and delete it afterwards the foto remains in the directory /data/media
This is correct. You have deleted the media object (in the database). You have not deleted the file.
If you want to find/delete old files, go to: Control panel, Manage media, Unused files.

How big is the file?
What are the PHP settings (Control panel / Server information) for: upload_max_filesize and post_max_size
