Adopted child - How to record? was created by egsnyder
Is there a proper way to record adopted parents and birth parents on webtrees?

There are two separate things to record.

1) the adoption pedigree. When you add a new child, there is a "pedigree" field, which can be "birth", "adopted", "fostered", etc.

If you forgot to specify this when you added the child, then you can use the "link to existing parents as a child" link, then choose the existing parents, and then specify the pedigree in the next step. This will replace any existing pedigree.

2) the adoption event (if known). You add this just like any other fact or event.

Should the adopted person's children be linked to the birth name or the adopted name?? Or both?

That's really up to you. Which name do you want to use for this individual

You can record both the birth and adopted names. webtrees will use whichever one appears first.

One option to consider is to use the privacy rules.

You can put the birthname first - but mark it "show to admins".
You then put the adopted name second.

The result will be that all users will see the adopted name (which is how they were probably known), but you will see the birth name (which may be more useful for your genealogy research).

My problem is that I have been helping the adopted person (age 50) connect with his birth mother (my sister-in-law), and his half brothers (my nephews). I want to add him to my tree so that he can see his heritage, and also begin tracking his own birth ancestry. He has found his birth father as well.

The individual will have two sets of parents (birth and adopted), and two names (birth and adopted).

Both are obviously shown on the individual's page.

But there are many places where we can only show one. For example, the pedigree chart can only show one set of parents, and the "chart boxes" can only show one name.

webtrees follows the GEDCOM convention that where there are multiple versions of data, the first one is the "prefered" one, and it will use that in circumstances where we can only display one.

Since the individual is living, it is probably best to ask them which name/family they would prefer.

You just then need to put that one ahead of the other. webtrees provides options to re-order families, names, facts etc. to allow you to do this.
