Forum Module? was created by kevyNC
Hello,

I am brand new to webtrees. I am very impressed so far. I guess I overlooked this software because of being free. It has more of the look and use experience I was looking for. I tried using another program with WordPress but that had issues. I found several Add-Ons such the "Fancy" add-ons. I have not found the "Forum" module add-on like this site has. Is it publicly available? if so, where do I find it? Will it work with Beta 2.x?

Right now I am just testing the software locally, I plan to replace my current live test site shortly.(Also moving to a new Host)

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

> I have not found the "Forum" module add-on like this site has

If by "this site", you mean www.webtrees.net , then this site is *just* a forum.
It is the project website - not a "webtrees genealogy site".

If you want a forum on your site, the best option is to install your favorite one on the same server, and then create links from webtrees to the forum and back again. Here's an example of a site that does that: www.ghezibde.net/genealogie .

However, most experienced webtrees users will tell you that it is hard enough to get your users to contribute genealogy data. Hardly any have a sufficiently active community to warrant a forum.

Thanks for you response. I guess I really need to install a module for that. Is there a place to download the module / add-on?
I agree that forum will likely be limited -- but often people like to share stories that others might find interesting versus contributing useful data.

To my knowledge, there is no forum module or add-on.

You need a complete, stand-alone forum package.

Maybe something like WordPress would be more appropriate than a forum?

Thanks -- I have looked at WordPress for my other test site -- but it did not work well with WordPress. Also, I would not want separate logons (too confusing). I will do some more exploring of options. Maybe I will learn enough PHP and write my learn if I have too.

Thanks Kevin

Here's an old thread on the same subject, containing a quickly hacked forum module for webtrees:
www.webtrees.net/index.php/en/forum/4-cu...forum-under-webtrees

Note it's quite old and needs some work...

stamboom.BertKoor.nl runs on webtrees v1.7.13

Thanks! This is helpful. At least it gives me an option and code to start from if nothing else.

Kevin,
I have a forum/chat module on my site - shemwellfamily.com I have it set up where visitors can see it but only signed in members can post to it, no 2nd logon is required. It might give you a good starting module if you want a copy.

Hi Barry,

Thanks -- I think this will serve my purposes and/or I can adapt code if needed. Where can we find the source code you used to set your forums up, along with settings?

thanks,
Kevin

Shemwell wrote: I think there's enough information in the forum.zip - forum notes.txt file to change the chat folders etc. This module works for ver. 1.7.14. The chat's can be saved in the database or a file, this one is set up for a file (chattxt). It should work as is, I use the database for easier backups. It uses iframe's which might cause problems with some servers that don't allow their use.

Forum2.0.zip works with ver 2.0.

Thank you very much, Barry. This forum is very useful to me. Ask a technical question: setchat. PHP setting room name (database can not be Chinese), I want to set Chinese, how to modify.

I wish you a happy life.

@Shemwell - and others.

***** PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS MODULE *****

It has absolutely no security at all.

Barry - look at your site. I just posted a message "Testing, Testing" as you.
I could easily have posted a malicious script.

Thanks for the heads up. I've been using the module for several years without issue, you're the first person to demonstrate its vulnerability. I deleted the post with the files and removed it from my visitors page. How can I secure it?

The code can't be fixed.

It is not a case of fixing a few bugs. The entire design is broken.

For example, it does all its validation in the client. Anyone who can use "right-click, edit" in their browser can bypass the validation, login, use another account, etc.

There are now two ways:
1. webtrees adds support for Oauth2.0 protocol.
2. webtrees and wordpress integrate user login.

No matter which one is implemented, as long as it can be integrated with wordpress, it will greatly expand the functions of the website.
