I made some minor changes to the webtrees theme to suit myself, and saved the changes in a new theme as per Greg's instructions above. In case these changes are of interest to others, I'm copying them below along with my rationale.
Some very minor changes to the webtrees theme in style.css.
1. Line 350 .date color changed from #333377 to #00000F.
Better contrast against the background. Dates are important and I found the default setting not contrasty enough.
2. Line 357 .label font-weight changed from bold to italic
Italic doesn't seem to work, but at least this removes the bold. These labels (Source, Citation details, Text, Note) should be in the background rather than the foreground, again for readability. It's the data that's important, not the label.
3. Line 358 .label (added this line). color: #377777;
Softens the color to deemphasize the label further. It's not genealogical information.
4. Line 110 .person_boxF background-color changed to #FFF0F0
I found the original shade of pink too dark, and changed it to the pink used in Xenea.
5. Line 295 .name1 color changed to #000000
Improve the contrast of the name. The original was too gray and uncontrasty for my eyes.

You have failed to provide these forum users with a URL so that we may see the effect. Was that your intention? I don't think many admins are going to be experimenting with the code in general, at least without seeing the results prior to tinkering.
We changed the color of the pink a long time ago - to the same as the Xenea theme.
