The translators may want to look at quotation marks in their translation files.

In webtrees we should not use in the texts /" or ". We use these " around the texts.

English uses double curved quotes “_” for quotation marks in texts.
Other languages use the English quotation marks or for instance „_“, ”_” or «_».

I see in some language files that certain translated texts use language specific quotation marks and other texts the English quotation marks. You might want to update your language files to always use the language specific quotation marks.

See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quotation_mark and www.witch.westfalen.de/csstest/quotes/quotes.html .

Hi Meliza,

Running a search for " in a my fr-CA.po file returns 19 084 hits.
All msgid and msgstr include that sign.

msgid "#%s"
msgstr "#%s"

Do you have a better solution to spot the quotation marks in the translated part of the text?

OK. My first search was with NotePad++
I ran the same search with BetterPOEditor and got 46 hits. Many results from

<div class="largeError">

and such..

Meliza is talking about things like this:

msgid "Change the “Home page” blocks"
msgstr "Bloques de la \"Página de inicio\""

The translator has replaced "language quotes" with "computer quotes".

This example is Spanish, so I guess it should be

msgid "Change the “Home page” blocks"
msgstr "Bloques de la «Página de inicio»"

In Poedit I can search for “ and I see all the texts that include quotation marks.

In the fr-CA.po file I see translated texts like
msgstr "Le module «&nbsp;%s&nbsp;» a été désactivé."
Changer les blocs de la page « Ma page » de cet utilisateur
and like
msgstr "Les préférences de l’arbre généalogique “%s” ont été mises à jour."

Hi again,

The original text in English shows the quotation marks like this:

The preferences for the family tree “%s” have been updated.

Is that correct?

The English texts are "US English", and hence use

“_”

Hi Greg,

It is not always obvious to see if the quotation marks are part of a code or not.

There are a few "computer quotes" in the transations. There are where we use HTML. e.g.

msgid "This website is down for maintenance. You should <a href=\"index.php\">try again</a> in a few minutes."
msgstr "Este sitio está desactivado por mantenimiento. Debe <a href=\"index.php\">intentar otra vez</a> en pocos minutos."

All others are "language quotes".

Hi,

I don't understand that quotation marks thing. [strike]So, I give up translation. You may remove the fr-CA file, if you want. I won't maintain it anymore. Too much trouble.[/strike]

All the quotation marks in the French/French-Canadian translations are OK.
