I have a question about the translation strings 'Attendant' and 'Attending'.

What kind of people are meant: caregivers, or people who are present at an occasion, or something else?

German translation:
'Attendant' => 'Anwesender'
'Attending' => 'anwesend'

French translation:
'Attendant' => 'Préposé(e)'
'Attending' => 'Présent(e)'

Dutch translation:
'Attendant' => 'Verzorger'
'Attending' => 'Verzorgt'

For a correct translation, it should be clear what the terms "Attendant" and "Attending" mean.

Is it possible to give a description of these terms, so that they can be translated correctly?

I assume that "attending" means present at an event (e.g. guest at wedding, mourner at funeral, etc.).

I do not know about attendant.

Both terms were inherited from phpGedView.

The attendant (grammatically a noun) is attending (grammatically a gerund or present participle) an event.

In the context of ASSO and RELA tags I consider both of identical meaning and suggest to remove the "attending" because all other RELA options are nouns as well.

Those who used "attending" may then want to run a search and replace.

I assume that "attending" means present at an event (e.g. guest at wedding, mourner at funeral, etc.).

I do not know about attendant.

I was under the impression that one of the terms was meant to be the inverse relationship of the other (like employer vs employee). Not sure which would be which though ... This anyway seems dubious grammatically.

Otherwise they would be rather redundant?

And from PGVWiki - PhpGedView:

PhpGedView includes the following relationships; attendant, attending, best_man, bridesmaid, buyer, circumciser, civil_registrar, friend, godfather, godmother, godparent, informant, lodger, nurse, priest, rabbi, registry_officer, seller, servant, twin, twin_brother, twin_sister, witness. You can use other values, but to do so you must edit the raw GEDCOM record.

(Disclaimer: no idea what phpGedView authors or users may have been thinking when they invented or used these tags.)

In English at least, an "attendant" has a job to do: a nurse attending to a patient, a best man attending to the groom at a wedding are attendants in this sense.
Someone "attending" is merely present at the event: I attended my cousin's wedding but played no role in the ceremony.

Hope this helps,

-Ed.
