Geographic data & Maps il y a 2 mois 1 semaine #1

In webtrees 2.0.3 The Mapping feature seems to have the MAP inheritance upside down.

In webtrees 1.7 if the least significant part of the address isn't defined it would show the next higher level but in webtrees 2.0.3 it shows a world map with "The location of this place is not known", even if the next more significant place is known.
I personally think the former way is to be preferred, I have a lot of Farm / property names on my tree which don't appear on a map, so would like the map to display the area until / if can get an exact location.

Two examples from my tree where the webtrees 2.0.3 Maps show the wrong map.

Example 1
Both the following places show same map of "St. Bega Church" but the maps for each are properly defined, the first one shows the house and the second shows the Church in the House Grounds.
World - England - Cumberland - Keswick - Mirehouse <Map incorrect, shows the St. Bega Church Map instead>
World - England - Cumberland - Keswick - Mirehouse - St. Bega Church <Map correct>

Example 2
Both "High Houses" & "Snittlegarth" show maps of adjacent properties just outside of "Torpenhow", but the "Torpenhow" map (that is defined to show the nearby town) now shows a map of both "High Houses" & "Snittlegarth" but not the town.

World - England - Cumberland - Torpenhow <Map incorrect, shows both the following combined on 1 map instead>
World - England - Cumberland - Torpenhow - High Houses <Map correct>
World - England - Cumberland - Torpenhow - Snittlegarth <Map correct>

It seems like the Lest significant address is always displayed in preference to the More significant when all are correctly defined.
Perhaps I am missing something here but this is what I am seeing.
Thanks for the great work on the program.

Which place does this. I've been browsing through your site, and can't find one.
Post the URL?

> World - England - Cumberland - Keswick - Mirehouse <Map incorrect, shows the St. Bega Church Map instead>
> World - England - Cumberland - Keswick - Mirehouse - St. Bega Church <Map correct>

The page for Mirehouse shows the places within it. You only have one place within it - which is shown.

The same for Keswick - there is only one place within it, so the map is centered on it.

There are many places in Cumberland, so this page has several map pins, and it auto-zooms around them.

It is not clear to me what you think is wrong, or what you would display differently?

PS - I know St Bega Church!! I've visited it a few times, and I'll be there in August, if the lockdown is ended...

Hi Greg, Thanks for the reply.

If you look at my site <Search for Ann Greg> or:-
https://webtrees.wilson-mciver.com/index.php?route=%2Ftree%2FGGW1.GED%2Findividual%2FI6241%2FAnn-Gregg

The page for Mirehouse shows the places within it. You only have one place within it - which is shown.

I have 2 places in Mirehouse.
  • Ann Greg died at Mirehouse, the house not the church, the chart for Mirehouse only displays St.Begas Church, not the house itself.
  • She is Buried at St.Begas church, in the Grounds of Mirehouse
Under <Control Panel>, <Geographic data> the two maps are defined, see attached image but clicking on either her death place or her burial place on the site both show the same map, which doesn't include the house.

> it shows a world map with "The location of this place is not known"

"Bendemeer" is currently undefined (I can define it but have not done so yet) and it shows the <"The location of this place is not known> message, there are lots of others too.
V1.7 would have shown the <New England> Map, 1 level up and I would prefer that, in fact I really like the new display with all the places in New England, giving the number of Individuals and families in each location, that is well thought out.

Mirehouse and St. Begas is a beautiful area, I hope you get there in August, they way things are now, who knows?
Keep up the good work with the program, we really do appreciate your efforts with this complex task.

I totally agree to both items of Wilson. When a place isn't yet defined by it's location, please make the program show the area of the next known upper level.

And yes, keep on going to make this wonderful system work for us.

@Wilson. Can you help me to set up my test system to reproduce your problem. I don't really follow what you are asking, and I can only guess at what data you have.

I can find most problems within a couple of minutes of reproducing them on my dev machine.

Can you

(a) create an export of all your place data (as a CSV file).
(b) create a test GEDCOM with enough data to reproduce the issue. Tip: use the clippings cart to copy some records into a new/temporary tree, and then edit names/dates/etc. to anonymise data of living individuals.
(c) give me a URL, and tell me what you see, and what you expect to see.

Post on the github issue tracker, if you can. Otherwise post here on the forum.

Thanks

I have set up a test database as directed, 17 people in total
I have also Posted this issue on the github issue tracker [Geographic data: Some Maps display Incorrectly. #3229] , this gives details of the problem, what I see and what I expect to see, complete with links to the test database.
This is the first time I have used the Issue Tracker, hope I have done it correctly.
I am not sure what you wanted me do do with the Places-Global.csv file??

I also find this behavior a bit odd, but it's the disign. The case is if there are subordinates to "Place", the location (pin) of "Place" is not displayed on the map. Instead the map is autozoomed to display all subordinates to "Place". If there is only one subordinate, the map is zoomed to show this subordinate only.

In your case, St. Bega Church is the only subordinate to Mirehouse, and thus displayed instead of Mirehouse. If you "go up" one level to Keswick, location of Mirehouse will be correctly displayed.

I don't really see the problem, you are seeing a gradually expanding hierarchy (The menu item is Place Hierarchy after all), if you start at the Global level you see a world map with pins (possibly with some clustered) of all the countries with locations defined, click on a country and the map will zoom in to show all the defined locations IN THAT COUNTRY. Continue clicking on locations to progress down the hierarchy. So in the example, if Keswick, Cumberland, England is selected the map will zoom to show all the places defined as subordinates of Keswick i.e Mirehouse. Select Mirehouse and you see St. Bega's Church which is the subordinate of Mirehouse.

As far as getting the message "The location of this place is not known" what's the point of displaying the next place up the hierarchy, the location would be wrong and therefore misleading, surely the solution is to enter the miissing co-ordinates.

I have a lot of Farm / property names on my tree which don't appear on a map, so would like the map to display the area until / if can get an exact location

In this instance I'd enter the farm name as an address then when the location known, either add lat/long to the event, or create a location

To me it's not a problem at all. The only occurrence I find a "bit odd", is when there is only one subordinate to "Place".
Nitpicking, but in my opinion, the zoom level (and center) set for "Place" should be used instead of zooming in on the only subordinate.
If not, why do we set zoom level?

On Wilson's site, I guess users would expect to see the location of Mirehouse when they click "Mirehouse, Keswick, Cumberland, England" in Facts and events, and not the "zoomed in" location of St. Bega.
webtrees.wilson-mciver.com/index.php?rou...%2FI6241%2FAnn-Gregg

Zoom level saved in the geo data is ignored.
