Where images should be I see a red square with the number 500. If I try to upload a new image, the upload seems to go OK, but then I see a red square with the number 404 where the image should be.

Two different problems.

Are there any error messages in the webtrees error log (control panel -> website logs)?

Are there any error emssages in your webserver (e.g. apache) error logs?

In the webtrees error log, I find: Cannot create thumbnail Could not write the image

In the apache logs, there are no error messages.

No, I've got Imagick installed and there is sufficient memory.

My bad.

The subdirectories data/cache, data/thumbnail-cache and data/tmp, need to be writable by the apache process, not just the user maintaining the web site.

Maybe that should be added to the FAQ page bertkoor mentioned.
