Trying to istall webtrees using 1.4.5 which started however now it wont continue giving message

D:\CustomerData\webspaces\webspace_00107668\wwwroot\webtrees\data

Oops! webtrees was unable to create files in this folder.

This usually means that you need to change the folder permissions to 777.

however I have no idea how to do this what so ever

You'll probably need to contact your web host and ask them to do it.

Have you tried with your FTP software?
For example with FileZilla.
Right-click on the folder.
And then access rights to the folder.

(Sorry, in french)

I am having this problem as well. I changed ALL of my folders in the root directory to 777 just to see if webtrees was trying to create the files outside of that particular folder. I am still getting the error "Oops! webtrees was unable to create files in this folder." My host/domain is GoDaddy.

Is there anything I am missing?

I would be surprised if GD allowed you to change all the folder permissions to 777, but I suppose it may be possible.
If the software is unable to create files within a folder/directory, then it lacks proper write/create permissions - that simple.
I would suggest either contacting your ISP/GD for help, or do a new installation as the permissions are usually inherited upon creation.

Am I right in assuming that Webpages creates folders/files only within the folder I created for it?

Did you unpack it on your local machine and look at the structure?
Did you use FTP and examine the structure on your remote installation?

Yes, Master folder with files and folders nested within, usually several deep.

ToyGuy - I did unpack on my HD and then used the GD Uploader to put all of the files under the Master folder into a "webtrees" Master folder on my root structure. I'll keep checking to see if perhaps there is a 777 issue within that structure. If not, I'll file a ticket with GD to help. Thank you for your time.

**UPDATE: I realized I was missing one folder on the Server. Corrected and working now**

Hooray. It is usually something just that simple. We all have made that kind of mistake, so glad it is now working as designed.

I also get the same problem.

As you see from the 2 attachments I still have the problem. I have tried webtrees versions 1.7.2 & 1.7.7 Both pull up the same problem.

System config is as follows:

Fedora Server Version 24
Running under Virtual Box.

Just to let you know I have loaded and am running Media Wiki on the same server with no problems. Can someone please simplify or tell me what I am doing wrong.
I have loaded everything up front and was able to continue from the 1st page but froze at the 2nd page. Your self-check for permissions on a directory is not working in this installation.

Specifically, webtrees tests for write permission by:

creating a file webtrees/data/test.txt
reading the contents of this file
deleting this file

Any one of those three steps may have failed.

In your "oops2.PNG" image, try also selecting "Recurse into subdirectories".

Also, in your "oops2.PNG" image, there is probably a "user" and "group" shown
behind the popup window. Knowing these may be helpful.

> Just to let you know I have loaded and am running Media Wiki on the same server

MediaWiki does not require the ability to create files (unless you are uploading images).
So, if your webserver is unable to write files, it is still possible to run MediaWiki.

The only user on that Fedora Server is "root"

I also tried both selecting and un-selecting "Recurse into subdirectories, both still failed.

Let me know what other snapshots you would like to look at and I will take them.
