Hi,

I'm working on translating the remaining Arabic but I noticed some specific 4 level locations are listed in the file. It would be nice for me to add our locations and translations so we can get them all translated. How do I add our locations (ex: Hiawatha, Carbon County, Utah,United States) to the translation file?

I don't think places go through any translation process, but I could be wrong.

Ah yes, ofcourse, now I do remember. Those are probably the LDS Temple locations.

I did wonder why these are included in the translations.
Maybe just so the country names and some city names get translated.
For example: London, United Kingdom --> Londres, Royaume-Uni.

Not just those. I found at least 100 entries. Things like:

Portland, Oregon, United States
Orlando, Florida, United States

I'd like to also add our locations so we can have them appear in Arabic on the Arabic pages and not in English

These two are definitely LDS Temple locations. They do occur in app/GedcomCode/GedcomCodeTemp.php and there are about 160 of them. These only go through the translation process if they occur as a temple code in specific LDS events. Even if you literally have these places in your data, they would not get translated. Maybe with a small change in the core code they would. It's "simply" a matter of adding I18N::translate() around every occurrence of printing place names in webtrees.

Yes, I understand. It's actually in principle a good idea. Other languages with non-latin scripts such as Greek, Russian, Hebrew, Thai, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, etc etc could benefit as well. But maintaining translations for thousands, if not millions of places: that's kinda problematic. What most users do (I think) is just note places in the script their visitors use most often. The same as with names... But with names at least you can add them in other scripts.

The "places" aspect of GEDCOM is badly structured. We could discuss for ages what can be improved in handling places, but as long as we are tied to GEDCOM specifications not much can be done I'm afraid.

I would still suggest this as a new feature. Or a better way you guys can figure out do it (I'm sure you would be better at this than me :) )
I mean if a lookup table could be hosted externally of the gedcom file, or if a current suitable database exists? or would using Google API like this work?
developers.google.com/places/web-service/details

All I mean is the shortcomings of places in Gedcom is something I think all of the community would greatly benefit from developing further than the current capabilities. I know we would!

Thanks anyways if it doesn't work I still appreciate your responses and help
